OEM Customization: Avoid the "Public Mold" Trap
The Illusion of Branding
Many B2B buyers think that putting a logo on a factory's "public mold" makes them a brand. It doesn't. In 2026, if five other companies are selling the exact same shape on Amazon, you are in a "race to the bottom" on price.
1. Private Molds vs. Public Molds
If your budget allows, invest in a Private Mold. It requires a $5k-$15k upfront investment but it gives you 100% market exclusivity. If you must use a public mold, focus on Material Customization—request a unique durometer (hardness) or a custom Pantone color that competitors don't have.
2. Intellectual Property (IP) Protection
Ensure your contract explicitly states that you own the Packaging Artwork and any Custom Tooling you pay for. Without this, your manufacturer can (和 often will) sell your "custom" design to other buyers once your order is finished.
